Tune in to the full episode to hear about Symone’s experience growing up Black in Omaha, Nebraska, how she convinced Bernie Sanders to hire her (at just 24 years old, with no presidential-campaign experience) as his campaign press secretary, and a childhood spent acting out (with the help of an imaginary alter ego named Donna Burns) the very role she’s playing now as a TV host.

Politics

<media:keywords></media:keywords>

Has QAnon Infiltrated the GOP? | Hell & High Water

John Heilemann talks with Denver Riggleman, former Republican congressman from Virginia, and, until recently, 1/6 committee staffer. The North Carolina Tar Heels alumnus was only picked third overall, an almost comical piece of trivia given the level of dominance he would impose on the game and the recognition he would gain on a global scale.

LeBron James, in contrast, was a first pick right out of high school in 2003.

But LZ and Will don’t want to retread a tired conversation about which athlete is better. Instead they discuss Jordan and James as men first and athletes second.

The biggest difference between Jordan and James is that LeBron generally looks happy. Rather, it's that Michael Jordan, according to many portraits drawn by sports reporters (and by the Jordan-approved miniseries, The Last Dance) appears miserable. LeBron is socially engaged with the world around him. Jordan is consumed by a never-ending desire to win.

In the West, the Golden State Warriors square off against the Dallas Mavericks.

Will and LZ both thought the Bucks would come out of the East but they got that wrong with a round to spare. They did, however, pick Golden State to win the West, and that bet is still alive.

LZ and Will recorded their conversation hours before Game 1, in which the Celtics lost to the Heat to kick off this round of competition. But LZ thinks the Celtics have what it takes to win it all: “Brad Stevens was able to get them to a certain place much faster than anyone predicted, particularly considering he had never coached in the NBA before."

Will agrees the Celtics are looking good. But turning to the West, he has a self-diagnosed case of Golden State fever. “If the Warriors are going, I don't see how Dallas can stop them.”

Politics

<media:keywords>Donald Trump,nba,NFL,Lebron James,WNBA,Russia,Boston Celtics,Michael Jordan,Dallas Cowboys,Hall of Fame,Dan Snyder,Brittney Griner,Jerry Jones,kneeling,Lisa Leslie,NBA Playoffs,prisoner exchange,Chris Middleton,Lonzo Ball,Viktor Bout,Chicago Bulls,NBA Draft</media:keywords>

After Leaked Roe v. But the WNBA is among the few to have done so, with a statement citing the league’s belief that “all women have the right to autonomy over their bodies and fair and equal access to health care.” The league’s Atlanta Dream also came out in support of Roe, as did a number of players and coaches. Athletes in other games have also voiced their opposition to the decision, but for the most part, there’s been a conspicuous silence.

FOX Sports’ Skip Bayless is as noxious as they come. He made a name for himself trolling LeBron James no matter how well the King performs on the court.

It doesn’t help that Skip, who built his career on credible reporting, is smart enough to know better. But instead of making his arguments based on his actual beliefs, he’s willing to play whatever side will get him the most attention, money, and influence. “There's a network for stupidity, and it's the highest grossing,” LZ says. “That's what Skip Bayless’ success has ushered in: a business model in which arguing for nonsensical things can be popularized, monetized, and actually make you an established figure in sports journalism.”

Will agrees. “That is what is wrong with all of media,” he says. “And I would argue sports has almost pioneered this.”

Culture

<media:keywords>Lebron James,Joel Embiid,sports journalism,Dallas Cowboys,FOX Sports,Jerry Jones,Skip Bayless,Colin Cowherd,Clay Travis,Jorge Sedano</media:keywords>

GOP Primaries Are the Latest Display of Trump’s Ownership Over the Party

John Heilemann talks with Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin, national political correspondents for the New York Times, political analysts for CNN, and authors of the newsmaking account of the 2020 election This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future. King appeared with her husband before the press to concede the facts of the affair, while blaming it on loneliness rather than an attraction to women. In a sense, King burrowed deeper into the closet.

But the damage was already done. King quickly lost sponsorship deals, including with Wimbledon, and at least half a million dollars in endorsements.

What caused the melee? After a tit for tat of dangerous throws between the two teams, Mets pitcher Yoan López sent a ball close to Cards batter Nolan Arenado's head – and for Arenado at least, that was a no-no. The two started screaming at each other, and the benches and bullpens were emptied as players rushed the field.

But when you look at the causes for such fights, the unwritten rules presumably violated are inconsistent, and can vary greatly from one team to another’s interpretation.

St. Louis Cardinals’ own star pitcher Jack Flaherty was fined for his role in the latest bust-up. In any sport, when the stakes are higher, so is the level of play. But that goes double in the NBA Playoffs. No one can hide from the pressure, and it’s fascinating to see who steps up and who shrinks in the moment.

LZ and Will discuss the best individual performances, and preview the second round of the playoffs.

There are “three revelations” in LZ’s book. For one, Jordan Poole is reflecting Steph Curry’s talent over with the Golden State Warriors. Second: sure, Ja Morant missed a game-winning layup, but his Memphis Grizzlies are only in this series (and have a chance at the Finals) because of him.

Last (and, yes, best), Giannis Antetokounmpo is proving he’s the most effective player alive. "Now that he's a champion, he just seems so much more confident and relaxed,” LZ says. Already, millions of fans and experts have decided which teams walked away the winners.

Will confesses that his Arizona Cardinals did poorly, in part by trading their first round pick for Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. "The Cardinals look like a team that is scrambling right now,” Will says.

LZ’s “other team” — the Detroit Lions — did okay. One of their picks, University of Michigan star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, “looks to be a beast,” LZ says.

The New York Jets had a better draft still, landing Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner with the 4th overall pick. Many consider him the best cornerback in the draft.

Beyond team-by-team performance, the draft also set a few interesting records and trends. Ten teams didn’t even make first round selections, which is a first. Only one quarterback was taken in the first round — Kenny Pickett to the Pittsburgh Steelers — and not until the 20th pick. Boston Red Sox organist Josh Kantor joins LZ and Will to talk about how the tradition has evolved, and his own take on it. “I just started my 20th season doing this and people often ask me, ‘Is this a dream job?’ And the answer is, ‘If you like playing the organ and watching baseball at Fenway Park, then yes, it is a dream job.’”

Culture

<media:keywords>Twitter,baseball,Boston Red Sox,Chicago Cubs,Josh Kantor,Nancy Faust,Nancy Bea Hefley,Fenway Park,Wrigley Field,organs</media:keywords>

Andrew Ross Sorkin on the Biggest Stories in Business

John Heilemann talks with Andrew Ross Sorkin, co-anchor of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” columnist and assistant editor at the New York Times and founder and editor-at-large of the paper’s financial news franchise, DealBook, and author of the best-selling book Too Big to Fail. Bush was part-owner and General Managing Partner of MLB’s Texas Rangers, in a deal inked this week in 1989.

We now know that the world of baseball almost kept the younger Bush away from following his father’s path to the highest office. In a memoir published in 2019, former MLB commissioner Bud Selig writes that “[h]ad things been different, he could have been the ninth commissioner, not me.” Yes, George W. Bush wasn’t so far from leading Major League Baseball, as opposed to the world’s most powerful country.

In this counterfactual history, the implications for baseball are rich. But the much bigger question is what he would not have done for the nation and the world.

Last week the House Committee on Oversight and Reform wrote that the Washington Commanders owner and his team “may have engaged in a troubling, long-running, and potentially unlawful pattern of financial conduct,” according to a letter the committee sent to the Federal Trade Commission.

The allegations include the withholding of millions of dollars from season ticket holders in the form of refundable deposits, and disguising ticket income that should have been part of the NFL’s revenue-sharing pool (teams must give 40% of their home ticket sales to the league for equal redistribution among its 32 franchises).

The story is developing, and the charges at its heart are still unproved.

Lamar Jackson seems to know just how much power a great player holds in this kind of bull market. The American presidency has been tied to a public appreciation of sports since at least 1865, when two baseball teams visited President Andrew Johnson in the White House. The hosting of championship teams at the White House became routine under President Ronald Reagan.

But after 2016 especially, when then-candidate Donald Trump launched abrasive criticism of NFL players who knelt in protest during pre-game renditions of the national anthem, what once felt like a space for fans of all political stripes to set aside their differences became yet another venue for conflict.

If presidential involvement in sports isn’t the unifier that it once was, should we even bother with it anymore? The limited set of pro sports games is being balkanized and distributed by a growing group of services (like Paramount+ and Peacock) each demanding that would-be viewers set up yet another username, password, and monthly credit card charges. Baseball fans already shell out around $100 a month for a local cable or satellite package, but to see Max Scherzer's first start with the New York Mets on April 8th, you had to subscribe to Apple TV+.

Attending games in person has grown pricier, too. Between 2010 and 2020, ticket prices for NFL games rose over 32%. That statistic was 38% for the NHL, 51% for the NBA, and 22% for MLB.

It seems like pro sports leagues think fans have an unlimited supply of cash to funnel into their endless array of products.

Ahead of the season start on Thursday, April 7, LZ and Will talk about which franchises face the most pressure in 2022.

Will it be the teams that broke the bank in the offseason? The Los Angeles Dodgers signed first baseman Freddie Freeman to a six-year contract worth $162 million, and the New York Mets spent big to bring Max Scherzer to their pitcher’s mound — he’s guaranteed a $43.3 million salary over three seasons.

Or will it be the clubs who made smaller changes and are instead banking on the talent they already have?

Democrats, Katyal suggests, also failed to take advantage of the hearings and missed an opportunity to alert the American public to the High Court’s dramatic decisions – from striking down key parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to potentially overturning the constitutional right to abortion in the near future. On March 28, 1984, 15 moving trucks from Mayflower Transit, an Indiana-based moving company, arrived at the Colts facility at around 10 p.m. Eight hours later, the Colts were gone from Baltimore and bound for their new home in Indianapolis.

The Colts had played in Memorial Stadium, a rundown facility. When the irascible Robert Irsay took over the franchise in 1972, he lobbied the city of Baltimore to build him a new venue. His efforts went nowhere.

The Maryland Senate passed legislation on March 27th that gave Baltimore the right to seize ownership of the Colts by eminent domain.

Fearing that he could lose his team, Irsay accepted Indianapolis' offer — which involved a new domed stadium — the next day.

Football would return to Baltimore in the '90s, when the city lured the Cleveland Browns and renamed it the Ravens. But for many fans and observers, the dramatic events of 1984 stand as the most notorious franchise move in NFL history.

Culture

<media:keywords>NFL,Baltimore, MD,Indianapolis Colts,William H. In recent years, games have slowed dramatically — with more dead time than ever — and the number of balls in play slumped as well.

The changes on the horizon are expected to be the most consequential in decades. As MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters, the agreement will bring the designated hitter to the National League and bring back the “ghost runner” that starts on second base in extra innings.

After some experimentation from the league, fans will also likely see larger bases to encourage more base-stealing, a pitch clock to keep games moving, and the limiting of defensive positional shifts to make hits easier to come by.
